Aalholm Castle
Closeup of Aalholm. Aalholm castle is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Denmark. Built in the 1200s, the citizens of Nysted and the surrounding area were subjets of the castle until 1409 when the town was granted rights of incorporation by King Eric. It is no longer crown property. The castle was sold to the Raben-Levetsau family in 1725 and then sold again in 1995.
